James Billings joined the Army with his brother-in-law, Samuel Stillson, and “family friend”, Freeland Gray. James was only 16 when he enlisted in 1862. Fourteen months later he was wounded at Thompson’s Station, TN and then transferred to the U.S. Signal Corps. From his biography, we find that: Mr. Billings enlisted as a private and was promoted to sergeant. The captain of his company was wounded and Mr. Billings was placed in command, holding that position as a non-commissioned officer for two months, at that time being but seventeen years of age.
After the war, James and his unit were sent to Texas and discharged in 1866 when he was 21 years old. Shortly after that, he migrated to Kansas where he trapped and hunted for a living, married Kate Prince and had 3 children.
