Charles Sanford Palmer - Great-Grandfather of Therese Marshall Charles was born in Oceola, Livingston County, MI in 1843. He enlisted in as a Private in Co. A., Regiment 6 of the 6th Michigan Cavalry on August 15, 1862 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was mustered into the service of the United States on October 13, 1862 with 1229 officers and men on its rolls. It left Michigan for Washington, D.C. on December10, 1862. It was in Washington until June, 1863.

 

Charles was ill in the hospital during April and September/October in Washington D. C. His unit became part of the Army of the Potomac until March 1864. It was part of the 1s Brigade Army of the Potomac until June, 1865. Charles Palmer's service ended on June 8, 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth, KS with an honorable discharge.

 

During its entire time in the service of the United States, Co. A 6 Michigan Cavalry was assigned to the famous Michigan Brigade under the command of Brigadier General George A. Custer.

 

Charles Palmer married Emma Augusta York on November 6, 1867 at age 24 in Green Oak, Livingston County, Michigan. Emma was 21. He owned a farm in Danby Township, Ionia County, Michigan where he passed away at age 65 on April 10, 1909. Cause of death - enlargement of the heart.
