Lewis was a German/Prussian immigrant, born around 1823. He settled in the Jamestown/ North Dorr area, a land grant showing he had at least 40 acres.
In 1861 he married Anna Marie "Emma" Michels who came to the area from Germany in the 1850s with her parents.
His son Peter is buried at St. Sebastian, his daughter Katherine is at Riverside in Kalamazoo. It is unknown where Joseph is buried.
Lewis had a brother named Henry Hilzey who served in rhe Civil War with the 10th company Cavalry C from Feb 1865 - November 1865. He is buried at Star Cemetery in Jamestown. Although the war ended in the spring of 1865, because of post-war riots, the military stayed active for several more months.
A new tombstone is pending order.
