Jay Hole was born on October 23,1832 in Wayne Township, Darke County Ohio, the son of Daniel Webster Hole and Hannah Bartlett Hole. He had five siblings: Huldah, David, Catharine, John Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth.

 

Jay married Mary Jane Cottrell on June 6, 1889 in Darke County, Ohio. He was 56 years old when he married Mary Jane. Up until the 1870 United State Census, he lived with his parents. In the 1880 Census, he lived in a separate house next to his parents. His occupations during his adult life were as a farmer and carpenter.

 

On May 2,1864 Jay enlisted in Co. F, 152nd Ohio National Guard Infantry at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati. His brother, John Bartlett, served in the same company and regiment at the same time. The regiment left Ohio for New Creek, West Virginia on May 15, then moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia and served duty there until June. They marched with a 199-wagon supply train from Martinsburg to Beverly (430 miles) from June 4 to June 27. They saw action at Greenbrier Gap on June 22 and Sweet White Sulphur on June 23. On June 29, they left for Cumberland, Maryland and did duty along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, then left for Camp Dennison on August 25. Private Hole was mustered out at Camp Dennison on September 2, 1864. He filed for an invalid pension on September 10, 1890 and his widow continued to receive it after his death.

 

Jay and Mary Jane were parents to Maggie Belle, born in 1890; Gertrude Launa, born in 1891; Millard T., born in 1892; Carrie Ellen, born in 1895; and Mary Artimis, born in 1896. The 1900 Federal Census noted two children had died.

 

Jay Hole died on May 8, 1915 in Darke County, Ohio at the age of 82. He is buried in Versailles, Darke County. Mary Jane died May 2, 1953 in Darke County at the age of 83. Her unmarried daughter, Maggie, lived with her until her death.
