Joseph D. Patten was born on October 17, 1834, in Trumbull, Ohio, to John Hueston Patten and Elizabeth Jane Dixon.

He married Anna Elizabeth Eliza Fulkerson in 1854 and they had two children together, Harriet M. Patton and Jennie Patton. He then married Phoebe M. Folsom on July 27, 1856, and they had two children together, Olive Patton and Ida May Patton.

Jennie Patton, daughter of Joseph and Anna, married Edwin Jefferson Muzzall.

They had four children: Percy (b. 1895), Leslie (b. 1898), Anabel (b. 1903) and Elsie (b. 1904).

On February 14, 1865 he mustered into Company E, Indiana 151st Infantry as a Private. He was mustered out as a Private on September 19, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.

Joseph Patten died on August 11, 1922, in California at the age of 87, and was buried in Crown Point, Indiana.
